Push pruning old threads down to the target
When GDB wants to sync the thread list with the target's (e.g., due to
"info threads"), it calls update_thread_list:
update_thread_list (void)

And then prune_threads does:

Calling thread_live on each thread one by one is expensive.
E.g., on Linux, it ends up doing kill(SIG0) once for each thread. Not
a big deal, but still a bunch of syscalls...
With the remote target, it's cumbersome. That thread_alive call ends
up generating one T packet per thread:

That seems a bit silly when target_find_new_threads method
implementations will always fetch the whole current set of target
threads, and then add those that are not in GDB's thread list, to
GDB's thread list.
This patch thus pushes down the responsibility of pruning dead threads
to the target_find_new_threads method instead, so a target may
implement pruning dead threads however it wants.
Once we do that, target_find_new_threads becomes a misnomer, so the
patch renames it to target_update_thread_list.
The patch doesn't attempt to do any optimization to any target yet.
It simply exports prune_threads, and makes all implementations of
target_update_thread_list call that. It's meant to be a no-op.

fix calls to find_target_beneath
A long time ago Pedro pointed out that there are some calls to
find_target_beneath that pass in an explicit target_ops; but which
should instead use the ops provided to the method in question. See:

This patch is just a minor cleanup to fix all such calls. There were
only three.

make calls to help_list use enumerator
Currently there are many calls to help_list that pass the constant -1 as the "class" value. However, the parameter is declared as being of type enum command_class, and uses of the constant violate this abstraction. This patch fixes the error everywhere it occurs in the gdb sources. start change to progspace independence
This patch starts changing minimal symbols to be independent of the program space. Specifically, it adds a new objfile parameter to MSYMBOL_VALUE_ADDRESS and changes all the code to use it. This is needed so we can change gdb to apply the section offset when a minsym's address is computed, as opposed to baking the offsets into the symbol itself. A few spots still need the unrelocated address. For these, we introduce MSYMBOL_VALUE_RAW_ADDRESS. As a convenience, we also add the new macro BMSYMBOL_VALUE_ADDRESS, which computes the address of a bound minimal symbol. This just does the obvious thing with the fields. Note that this change does not actually enable program space independence. That requires more changes to gdb. This patch changes a few minimal symbol lookup functions to return a bound_minimal_symbol rather than a pointer to the minsym. This change helps prepare gdb for computing a minimal symbol's address at the point of use. Note that this changes even those functions that ostensibly search a single objfile. That was necessary because, in fact, those functions can search an objfile and its separate debug objfiles; and it is important for the caller to know in which objfile the minimal symbol was actually found. In a later patch we're going to change the minimal symbol address calculation to apply section offsets at the point of use. To make it simpler to catch potential problem spots, this patch changes the representation of minimal symbols and introduces new minimal-symbol-specific variants of the various accessors. This is necessary because it would be excessively ambitious to try to convert all the symbol types at once. Consistent use of (C) after "Copyright".
While writing the previous patch, I noticed that we're not consistent with the (C) in the copyright header. The maintainers manual prefers having it, though also says it's optional. We have over 10x more files with (C) than without in gdb's code, so I spent a few minutes grepping and fixing. Funny enough, the testsuite has it backwards. minor ravenscar-thread cleanup
The use of the ravenscar_open static global is unnecessary.
This patch removes it. It also removes some routines that
were created in association with the management of this global.

remote packet sent after Ravenscar inferior exited
When debugging a program using the Ravenscar profile, the debugger
sometimes tries to send the following packet to the remote after
the inferior exited.
(gdb) c
Continuing.
[...]
Sending packet: $vCont;c:1#13...Ack
Packet received: W00
Sending packet: $Hg1#e0...putpkt: write failed: Broken pipe.
As the inferior exited, the remote has already disconnected, and thus
the operation fails.
The reason why GDB sends the package is because the ravenscar-thread
module tries to updates the list of threads. But this doesn't make
sense, since the program has exited. This patch fixes it.
gdb/ChangeLog:
* ravenscar-thread.c (ravenscar_wait): Only update the list
of threads and inferior_ptid if the inferior is still alive.

[Ada] Adjust ada-tasks.c:ada_build_task_list
Originally, this function had a parameter called `warn_if_null'
which would trigger a message to be printed on stdout if the
program was found to not use Ada tasking. It used one of the printf_
functions for that, which is wrong when considering the context of
GDB/MI interpreters.
So, this patch changes this function to stop printing the message,
and leaves that part to the callers instead. It also changes the
semantics slightly to return the number of tasks found, rather than
a yes/no answer. Not strictly needed, but simple enough to do, and
potentially useful later.

ada-tasks.c: handle known tasks maintained by a simply-linked list.
The mapping between Ada tasks, and the underlying threads is normally maintained by the GNAT runtime under the known_tasks array. For performance reasons, this array is just a static array with 10_000 entries in it. However, this is not very practical in certain environments where memory is limited. For those environments, the runtime has been enhanced to use an alternate scheme with a linked list. This change enhances the Ada tasking support to recognize this situation and use the correct way of reading the tasks info based on the the situation. gdb/ChangeLog (Tristan Gingold) * ada-tasks.c (KNOWN_TASKS_LIST): New macro. [Ada/ravenscar] New name for active-thread symbol
The GNAT Ravenscar implementation has recently been enhanced to allow
programs using that runtime to run on multi-cpu systems. One of the
changes that were made is that the name of the symbol we use to
determine which task is the currently-running task has changed.
This patch enhances the debugger to use the new name, and fallback on
the old name if not found (this is for compatibility with older versions
of the compiler/runtime).
gdb/ChangeLog:
* ravenscar-thread.c (running_thread_name): Change value.
(read_thread_id): Remove advance declaration.
(get_running_thread_msymbol): New function.
(has_ravenscar_runtime): Use get_running_thread_msymbol to
compute msym_running_thread.
(get_running_thread_id): Renames read_thread_id. Slight modifications
to not take any argument anymore, using get_running_thread_msymbol
to determine which symbol to use instead.
(ravenscar_running_thread): Use get_running_thread_id instead of
read_thread_id.
