guile: Add as_a_scm_t_subr
Building GDB in C++ mode on Fedora 20, the gdb/guile/ code shows ~280 errors like: src/gdb/guile/guile.c:515:1: error: invalid conversion from ‘scm_unused_struct* (*)(SCM, SCM) {aka scm_unused_struct* (*)(scm_unused_struct*, scm_unused_struct*)}’ to ‘scm_t_subr {aka void*}’ [-fpermissive] This commit fixes them all. gdb/ChangeLog: 2015-09-07 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * guile/guile-internal.h (as_a_scm_t_subr): New. * guile/guile.c (misc_guile_functions): Use it. * guile/scm-arch.c (arch_functions): Use it. * guile/scm-block.c (block_functions, gdbscm_initialize_blocks): Use it. * guile/scm-breakpoint.c (breakpoint_functions): Use it. * guile/scm-cmd.c (command_functions): Use it. * guile/scm-disasm.c (disasm_functions): Use it. * guile/scm-exception.c (exception_functions) (private_exception_functions): Use it. * guile/scm-frame.c (frame_functions) * guile/scm-gsmob.c (gsmob_functions): Use it. * guile/scm-iterator.c (iterator_functions): Use it. * guile/scm-lazy-string.c (lazy_string_functions): Use it. * guile/scm-math.c (math_functions): Use it. * guile/scm-objfile.c (objfile_functions): Use it. * guile/scm-param.c (parameter_functions): Use it. * guile/scm-ports.c (port_functions, private_port_functions): Use it. * guile/scm-pretty-print.c (pretty_printer_functions): Use it. * guile/scm-progspace.c (pspace_functions): Use it. * guile/scm-string.c (string_functions): Use it. * guile/scm-symbol.c (symbol_functions): Use it. * guile/scm-symtab.c (symtab_functions): Use it. * guile/scm-type.c (type_functions, gdbscm_initialize_types): Use it. * guile/scm-value.c (value_functions): Use it. |

Replace some xmalloc-family functions with XNEW-family ones
This patch is part of the make-gdb-buildable-in-C++ effort. The idea is to change some calls to the xmalloc family of functions to calls to the equivalents in the XNEW family. This avoids adding an explicit cast, so it keeps the code a bit more readable. Some of them also map relatively well to a C++ equivalent (XNEW (struct foo) -> new foo), so it will be possible to do scripted replacements if needed. I only changed calls that were obviously allocating memory for one or multiple "objects". Allocation of variable sizes (such as strings or buffer handling) will be for later (and won't use XNEW). - xmalloc (sizeof (struct foo)) -> XNEW (struct foo) - xmalloc (num * sizeof (struct foo)) -> XNEWVEC (struct foo, num) - xcalloc (1, sizeof (struct foo)) -> XCNEW (struct foo) - xcalloc (num, sizeof (struct foo)) -> XCNEWVEC (struct foo, num) - xrealloc (p, num * sizeof (struct foo) -> XRESIZEVEC (struct foo, p, num) - obstack_alloc (ob, sizeof (struct foo)) -> XOBNEW (ob, struct foo) - obstack_alloc (ob, num * sizeof (struct foo)) -> XOBNEWVEC (ob, struct foo, num) - alloca (sizeof (struct foo)) -> XALLOCA (struct foo) - alloca (num * sizeof (struct foo)) -> XALLOCAVEC (struct foo, num) Some instances of xmalloc followed by memset to zero the buffer were replaced by XCNEW or XCNEWVEC. I regtested on x86-64, Ubuntu 14.04, but the patch touches many architecture-specific files. For those I'll have to rely on the buildbot or people complaining that I broke their gdb. gdb/ChangeLog: * aarch64-linux-nat.c (aarch64_add_process): Likewise. * aarch64-tdep.c (aarch64_gdbarch_init): Likewise. * ada-exp.y (write_ambiguous_var): Likewise. * ada-lang.c (resolve_subexp): Likewise. DWARF: handle non-local references in nested functions
GDB's current behavior when dealing with non-local references in the context of nested fuctions is approximative: - code using valops.c:value_of_variable read the first available stack frame that holds the corresponding variable (whereas there can be multiple candidates for this); - code directly relying on read_var_value will instead read non-local variables in frames where they are not even defined. This change adds the necessary context to symbol reads (to get the block they belong to) and to blocks (the static link property, if any) so that GDB can make the proper decisions when dealing with non-local varibale references. gdb/ChangeLog: * ada-lang.c (ada_read_var_value): Add a var_block argument and pass it to default_read_var_value. * block.c (block_static_link): New accessor. * block.h (block_static_link): Declare it. * buildsym.c (finish_block_internal): Add a static_link argument. This patch converts the code base to use the new struct event_location API being introduced. This patch preserves the current functionality and adds no new features. The "big picture" API usage introduced by this patch may be illustrated with a simple exmaple. Where previously developers would write: void my_command (char *arg, int from_tty) { create_breakpoint (..., arg, ...); ... } one now uses: void my_command (char *arg, int from_tty) { struct event_locaiton *location; struct cleanup *back_to; location = string_to_event_locaiton (&arg, ...); back_to = make_cleanup_delete_event_location (location); create_breakpoint (..., location, ...); do_cleanups (back_to); } Linespec-decoding functions (now called location-decoding) such as decode_line_full no longer skip argument pointers over processed input. That functionality has been moved into string_to_event_location as demonstrated above. gdb/ChangeLog * ax-gdb.c: Include location.h. Add casts for legitimate integer to enum conversions
This patch is mostly extracted from Pedro's C++ branch. It adds explicit casts from integer to enum types, where it is really the intention to do so. This could be because we are ... * iterating on enum values (we need to iterate on an equivalent integer) * converting from a value read from bytes (dwarf attribute, agent expression opcode) to the equivalent enum * reading the equivalent integer value from another language (Python/Guile) An exception to that is the casts in regcache.c. It seems to me like struct regcache's register_status field could be a pointer to an array of enum register_status. Doing so would waste a bit of memory (4 bytes used by the enum vs 1 byte used by the current signed char, for each register). If we switch to C++11 one day, we can define the underlying type of an enum type, so we could have the best of both worlds. gdb/ChangeLog: * arm-tdep.c (set_fp_model_sfunc): Add cast from integer to enum. Replace the block_found global with explicit data-flow
As Pedro suggested on gdb-patches@ (see https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2015-05/msg00714.html), this change makes symbol lookup functions return a structure that includes both the symbol found and the block in which it was found. Mostly trivial enum fixes
This is a patch I extracted from Pedro's C++ branch. It contains the most trivial enum fixes, where an integer type/value was used instead of the appropriate enum type/value. It fixes many C++ errors, since in C++ you can't mix integers and enums implicitely. Regardless of the C++ conversion, I think this is a good cleanup to make use of the appropriate enum types. Remove CHECK_TYPEDEF, use check_typedef instead
I think that the CHECK_TYPEDEF macro is not necessary, and even a bit annoying. It makes unclear the fact that the "type" variables gets overwritten. It has actually bitten me a few times. I think the following, explicit form, is better. type = check_typedef (type); This patches changes all instances of CHECK_TYPEDEF for an equivalent call to check_typedef. The bulk of the change was done with this sed: sed -i 's/CHECK_TYPEDEF (\([^)]*\));/\1 = check_typedef (\1);/' <file>.c The ChangeLog was generated using David Malcom's generate_changelog.py. I manually fixed those places where it gets the wrong function name, hopefully all of them. Pedro Alves: The commands that enables aren't even documented in the manual. Judging from that, I assume that only wdb users would ever really be using the --xdb switch. I think it's time to drop "support" for the --xdb switch too. more making TRY/CATCH callers look more like real C++ try/catch blocks
All these were caught by actually making TRY/CATCH use try/catch behind the scenes, which then resulted in the build failing (on x86_64 Fedora 20) because there was code between the try and catch blocks. gdb/ChangeLog: 2015-03-07 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * breakpoint.c (save_breakpoints): Adjust to avoid code between TRY and CATCH. * gdbtypes.c (safe_parse_type): Remove empty line. Split TRY_CATCH into TRY + CATCH
This patch splits the TRY_CATCH macro into three, so that we go from this: ~~~ volatile gdb_exception ex; TRY_CATCH (ex, RETURN_MASK_ERROR) { } if (ex.reason < 0) { } ~~~ to this: ~~~ TRY { } CATCH (ex, RETURN_MASK_ERROR) { } END_CATCH ~~~ Thus, we'll be getting rid of the local volatile exception object, and declaring the caught exception in the catch block. This allows reimplementing TRY/CATCH in terms of C++ exceptions when building in C++ mode, while still allowing to build GDB in C mode (using setjmp/longjmp), as a transition step. TBC, after this patch, is it _not_ valid to have code between the TRY and the CATCH blocks, like: TRY { } // some code here. CATCH (ex, RETURN_MASK_ERROR) { } END_CATCH Just like it isn't valid to do that with C++'s native try/catch. By switching to creating the exception object inside the CATCH block scope, we can get rid of all the explicitly allocated volatile exception objects all over the tree, and map the CATCH block more directly to C++'s catch blocks. The majority of the TRY_CATCH -> TRY+CATCH+END_CATCH conversion was done with a script, rerun from scratch at every rebase, no manual editing involved. After the mechanical conversion, a few places needed manual intervention, to fix preexisting cases where we were using the exception object outside of the TRY_CATCH block, and cases where we were using "else" after a 'if (ex.reason) < 0)' [a CATCH after this patch]. The result was folded into this patch so that GDB still builds at each incremental step. END_CATCH is necessary for two reasons: First, because we name the exception object in the CATCH block, which requires creating a scope, which in turn must be closed somewhere. Declaring the exception variable in the initializer field of a for block, like: #define CATCH(EXCEPTION, mask) \ for (struct gdb_exception EXCEPTION; \ exceptions_state_mc_catch (&EXCEPTION, MASK); \ EXCEPTION = exception_none) would avoid needing END_CATCH, but alas, in C mode, we build with C90, which doesn't allow mixed declarations and code. Second, because when TRY/CATCH are wired to real C++ try/catch, as long as we need to handle cleanup chains, even if there's no CATCH block that wants to catch the exception, we need for stop at every frame in the unwind chain and run cleanups, then rethrow. That will be done in END_CATCH. After we require C++, we'll still need TRY/CATCH/END_CATCH until cleanups are completely phased out -- TRY/CATCH in C++ mode will save/restore the current cleanup chain, like in C mode, and END_CATCH catches otherwise uncaugh exceptions, runs cleanups and rethrows, so that C++ cleanups and exceptions can coexist. IMO, this still makes the TRY/CATCH code look a bit more like a newcomer would expect, so IMO worth it even if we weren't considering C++. gdb/ChangeLog. 2015-03-07 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * common/common-exceptions.c (struct catcher) <exception>: No longer a pointer to volatile exception. Now an exception value. <mask>: Delete field. (exceptions_state_mc_init): Remove all parameters. Adjust. (exceptions_state_mc): No longer pop the catcher here. Exported const objects
const works different in C vs C++. In C++, a global "const" variable has internal linkage by default, resulting in link errors like: ... extension.o: In function `get_ext_lang_defn(extension_language)': gdb/extension.c:126: undefined reference to `extension_language_guile' gdb/extension.c:124: undefined reference to `extension_language_guile' ... The fix is to define exported const objects with "extern const". But that in C would not be a definition. So we need to #ifdef C vs C++ in this case. EXPORTED_CONST comes from include/ansidecl.h, but in the feature_to_c.sh case I think it's better to leave the script with no dependencies. gdb/ChangeLog: 2015-02-27 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * cp-valprint.c (vtbl_ptr_name): Use EXPORTED_CONST. * guile/guile.c (extension_language_guile): Use EXPORTED_CONST. * features/feature_to_c.sh: Tag the generated xml_builtin array with extern const in C++ mode. |

C++ keyword cleanliness, mostly auto-generated
This patch renames symbols that happen to have names which are reserved keywords in C++. Most of this was generated with Tromey's cxx-conversion.el script. Some places where later hand massaged a bit, to fix formatting, etc. And this was rebased several times meanwhile, along with re-running the script, so re-running the script from scratch probably does not result in the exact same output. I don't think that matters anyway. gdb/ 2015-02-27 Tom Tromey <tromey@redhat.com> Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> Rename symbols whose names are reserved C++ keywords throughout. gdb/gdbserver/ 2015-02-27 Tom Tromey <tromey@redhat.com> Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> Rename symbols whose names are reserved C++ keywords throughout. |

Fix redefinition errors in C++ mode
In C, we can forward declare static structure instances. That doesn't work in C++ though. C++ treats these as definitions. So then the compiler complains about symbol redefinition, like: src/gdb/elfread.c:1569:29: error: redefinition of ‘const sym_fns elf_sym_fns_lazy_psyms’ src/gdb/elfread.c:53:29: error: ‘const sym_fns elf_sym_fns_lazy_psyms’ previously declared here The intent of static here is naturally to avoid making these objects visible outside the compilation unit. The equivalent in C++ would be to instead define the objects in the anonymous namespace. But given that it's desirable to leave the codebase compiling as both C and C++ for a while, this just makes the objects extern. (base_breakpoint_ops is already declared in breakpoint.h, so we can just remove the forward declare from breakpoint.c) gdb/ChangeLog: 2015-02-11 Tom Tromey <tromey@redhat.com> Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> * breakpoint.c (base_breakpoint_ops): Delete. * dwarf2loc.c (dwarf_expr_ctx_funcs): Make extern. * elfread.c (elf_sym_fns_gdb_index, elf_sym_fns_lazy_psyms): Make extern. * guile/guile.c (guile_extension_script_ops, guile_extension_ops): Make extern. * ppcnbsd-tdep.c (ppcnbsd2_sigtramp): Make extern. * python/py-arch.c (arch_object_type): Make extern. * python/py-block.c (block_syms_iterator_object_type): Make extern. * python/py-bpevent.c (breakpoint_event_object_type): Make extern. * python/py-cmd.c (cmdpy_object_type): Make extern. * python/py-continueevent.c (continue_event_object_type) * python/py-event.h (GDBPY_NEW_EVENT_TYPE): Remove 'qual' parameter. Split struct symtab into two: struct symtab and compunit_symtab.
Currently "symtabs" in gdb are stored as a single linked list of struct symtab that contains both symbol symtabs (the blockvectors) and file symtabs (the linetables). This has led to confusion, bugs, and performance issues. This patch is conceptually very simple: split struct symtab into two pieces: one part containing things common across the entire compilation unit, and one part containing things specific to each source file. Example. For the case of a program built out of these files: foo.c foo1.h foo2.h bar.c foo1.h bar.h Today we have a single list of struct symtabs: objfile -> foo.c -> foo1.h -> foo2.h -> bar.c -> foo1.h -> bar.h -> NULL where "->" means the "next" pointer in struct symtab. With this patch, that turns into: objfile -> foo.c(cu) -> bar.c(cu) -> NULL | | v v foo.c bar.c | | v v foo1.h foo1.h | | v v foo2.h bar.h | | v v NULL NULL where "foo.c(cu)" and "bar.c(cu)" are struct compunit_symtab objects, and the files foo.c, etc. are struct symtab objects. So now, for example, when we want to iterate over all blockvectors we can now just iterate over the compunit_symtab list. Plus a lot of the data that was either unused or replicated for each symtab in a compilation unit now lives in struct compunit_symtab. E.g., the objfile pointer, the producer string, etc. I thought of moving "language" out of struct symtab but there is logic to try to compute the language based on previously seen files, and I think that's best left as is for now. With my standard monster benchmark with -readnow (which I can't actually do, but based on my calculations), whereas today the list requires 77MB to store all the struct symtabs, it now only requires 37MB. A modest space savings given the gigabytes needed for all the debug info, etc. Still, it's nice. Plus, whereas today we create a copy of dirname for each source file symtab in a compilation unit, we now only create one for the compunit. So this patch is basically just a data structure reorg, I don't expect significant performance improvements from it. Notes: 1) A followup patch can do a similar split for struct partial_symtab. I have left that until after I get the changes I want in to better utilize .gdb_index (it may affect how we do partial syms). 2) Another followup patch *could* rename struct symtab. The term "symtab" is ambiguous and has been a source of confusion. In this patch I'm leaving it alone, calling it the "historical" name of "filetabs", which is what they are now: just the file-name + line-table. gdb/ChangeLog: Split struct symtab into two: struct symtab and compunit_symtab. * amd64-tdep.c (amd64_skip_xmm_prologue): Fetch producer from compunit. * block.c (blockvector_for_pc_sect): Change "struct symtab *" argument to "struct compunit_symtab *". make "permanent breakpoints" per location and disableable
"permanent"-ness is currently a property of the breakpoint. But, it should actually be an implementation detail of a _location_. Consider this bit in infrun.c: /* Normally, by the time we reach `resume', the breakpoints are either removed or inserted, as appropriate. The exception is if we're sitting at a permanent breakpoint; we need to step over it, but permanent breakpoints can't be removed. So we have to test for it here. */ if (breakpoint_here_p (aspace, pc) == permanent_breakpoint_here) { if (gdbarch_skip_permanent_breakpoint_p (gdbarch)) gdbarch_skip_permanent_breakpoint (gdbarch, regcache); else error (_("\ The program is stopped at a permanent breakpoint, but GDB does not know\n\ how to step past a permanent breakpoint on this architecture. Try using\n\ a command like `return' or `jump' to continue execution.")); } This will wrongly skip a non-breakpoint instruction if we have a multiple location breakpoint where the whole breakpoint was set to "permanent" because one of the locations happened to be permanent, even if the one GDB is resuming from is not. Related, because the permanent breakpoints are only marked as such in init_breakpoint_sal, we currently miss marking momentary breakpoints as permanent. A test added by a following patch trips on that. Making permanent-ness be per-location, and marking locations as such in add_location_to_breakpoint, the natural place to do this, fixes this issue... ... and then exposes a latent issue with mark_breakpoints_out. It's clearing the inserted flag of permanent breakpoints. This results in assertions failing like this: Breakpoint 1, main () at testsuite/gdb.base/callexit.c:32 32 return 0; (gdb) call callexit() [Inferior 1 (process 15849) exited normally] gdb/breakpoint.c:12854: internal-error: allegedly permanent breakpoint is not actually inserted A problem internal to GDB has been detected, further debugging may prove unreliable. The call dummy breakpoint, which is a momentary breakpoint, is set on top of a manually inserted breakpoint instruction, and so is now rightfully marked as a permanent breakpoint. See "Write a legitimate instruction at the point where the infcall breakpoint is going to be inserted." comment in infcall.c. Re. make_breakpoint_permanent. That's only called by solib-pa64.c. Permanent breakpoints were actually originally invented for HP-UX [1]. I believe that that call (the only one in the tree) is unnecessary nowadays, given that nowadays the core breakpoints code analyzes the instruction under the breakpoint to automatically detect whether it's setting a breakpoint on top of a breakpoint instruction in the program. I know close to nothing about HP-PA/HP-UX, though. [1] https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/1999-q3/msg00245.html, and https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/1999-q3/msg00242.html In addition to the per-location issue, "permanent breakpoints" are currently always displayed as enabled=='n': (gdb) b main Breakpoint 3 at 0x40053c: file ../../../src/gdb/testsuite/gdb.arch/i386-permbkpt.S, line 29. In turn, this means that if one adds commands to such a breakpoint, they're _always_ run: (gdb) start Starting program: /home/pedro/gdb/mygit/build/gdb/testsuite/gdb.arch/i386-permbkpt ... By making permanent-ness a property of the location, and eliminating the bp_permanent enum enable_state state ends up fixing that as well. No tests are added for these changes yet; they'll be added in a follow up patch, as skipping permanent breakpoints is currently broken and trips on an assertion in infrun. Fix for PR 17247: Block SIGCHLD while initializing Guile.
The problem here is that if a thread other than gdb's main thread gets a SIGCHLD (it's an asynchronous signal so the kernel will essentially pick a random thread) then gdb will hang if it is in sigsuspend when the SIGCHLD is delivered. The other thread will see the signal and the sigsuspend won't "wake up". Guile and libgc should be blocking SIGCHLD in their threads, but we need to work with Guile 2.0 and libgc 7.4. The problem first shows up in libgc 7.4 because it is the first release that enables multiple marker threads by default. gdb/ChangeLog: PR 17247 * guile.c: #include <signal.h>. (_initialize_guile): Block SIGCHLD while initializing Guile. Replaces the following, which is reverted. 2014-07-26 Doug Evans <xdje42@gmail.com> PR 17185 * configure.ac: Add check for header gc/gc.h. Add check for function setenv. * configure: Regenerate. * config.in: Regenerate. * guile/guile.c (_initialize_guile): Add workaround for libgc 7.4.0. |

PR 17185
PR 17185 describes a problem with using gdb+guile with libgc 7.4.0. The symptom is a hang in sigsuspend. [The thread referenced in the PR has the details.] It's not clear what the right fix is, or even where the bug is yet. This patch applies the same workaround Guile has applied. There is no functionality or real performance loss with this, and Guile has been using it for awhile. * configure.ac: Add check for header gc/gc.h. Add check for function setenv. * configure: Regenerate. * config.in: Regenerate. * guile/guile.c (_initialize_guile): Add workaround for libgc 7.4.0. |
