Add some more casts (1/2)
Note: I needed to split this patch in two, otherwise it's too big for the mailing list. This patch adds explicit casts to situations where a void pointer is assigned to a pointer to the "real" type. Building in C++ mode requires those assignments to use an explicit cast. This includes, for example: - callback arguments (cleanups, comparison functions, ...) - data attached to some object (objfile, program space, etc) in the form of a void pointer - "user data" passed to some function This patch comes from the commit "(mostly) auto-generated patch to insert casts needed for C++", taken from Pedro's C++ branch. Only files built on x86 with --enable-targets=all are modified, so the native files for other arches will need to be dealt with separately. I built-tested this with --enable-targets=all and reg-tested. To my surprise, a test case (selftest.exp) had to be adjusted. Here's the ChangeLog entry. Again, this was relatively quick to make despite the length, thanks to David Malcom's script, although I don't believe it's very useful information in that particular case... gdb/ChangeLog: * aarch64-tdep.c (aarch64_make_prologue_cache): Add cast(s). Add casts to memory allocation related calls
Most allocation functions (if not all) return a void* pointing to the allocated memory. In C++, we need to add an explicit cast when assigning the result to a pointer to another type (which is the case more often than not). The content of this patch is taken from Pedro's branch, from commit "(mostly) auto-generated patch to insert casts needed for C++". I validated that the changes make sense and manually reflowed the code to make it respect the coding style. I also found multiple places where I could use XNEW/XNEWVEC/XRESIZEVEC/etc. Thanks a lot to whoever did that automated script to insert casts, doing it completely by hand would have taken a ridiculous amount of time. Only files built on x86 with --enable-targets=all are modified. This means that all other -nat.c files are untouched and will have to be dealt with later by using appropiate compilers. Or maybe we can try to build them with a regular g++ just to know where to add casts, I don't know. I built-tested this with --enable-targets=all and reg-tested. Here's the changelog entry, which was not too bad to make despite the size, thanks to David Malcom's script. I fixed some bits by hand, but there might be some wrong parts left (hopefully not). gdb/ChangeLog: * aarch64-linux-tdep.c (aarch64_stap_parse_special_token): Add cast to allocation result assignment. * ada-exp.y (write_object_renaming): Likewise. Replace some xmalloc-family functions with XNEW-family ones
This patch is part of the make-gdb-buildable-in-C++ effort. The idea is to change some calls to the xmalloc family of functions to calls to the equivalents in the XNEW family. This avoids adding an explicit cast, so it keeps the code a bit more readable. Some of them also map relatively well to a C++ equivalent (XNEW (struct foo) -> new foo), so it will be possible to do scripted replacements if needed. I only changed calls that were obviously allocating memory for one or multiple "objects". Allocation of variable sizes (such as strings or buffer handling) will be for later (and won't use XNEW). - xmalloc (sizeof (struct foo)) -> XNEW (struct foo) - xmalloc (num * sizeof (struct foo)) -> XNEWVEC (struct foo, num) - xcalloc (1, sizeof (struct foo)) -> XCNEW (struct foo) - xcalloc (num, sizeof (struct foo)) -> XCNEWVEC (struct foo, num) - xrealloc (p, num * sizeof (struct foo) -> XRESIZEVEC (struct foo, p, num) - obstack_alloc (ob, sizeof (struct foo)) -> XOBNEW (ob, struct foo) - obstack_alloc (ob, num * sizeof (struct foo)) -> XOBNEWVEC (ob, struct foo, num) - alloca (sizeof (struct foo)) -> XALLOCA (struct foo) - alloca (num * sizeof (struct foo)) -> XALLOCAVEC (struct foo, num) Some instances of xmalloc followed by memset to zero the buffer were replaced by XCNEW or XCNEWVEC. I regtested on x86-64, Ubuntu 14.04, but the patch touches many architecture-specific files. For those I'll have to rely on the buildbot or people complaining that I broke their gdb. gdb/ChangeLog: * aarch64-linux-nat.c (aarch64_add_process): Likewise. * aarch64-tdep.c (aarch64_gdbarch_init): Likewise. * ada-exp.y (write_ambiguous_var): Likewise. * ada-lang.c (resolve_subexp): Likewise. DWARF: handle non-local references in nested functions
GDB's current behavior when dealing with non-local references in the context of nested fuctions is approximative: - code using valops.c:value_of_variable read the first available stack frame that holds the corresponding variable (whereas there can be multiple candidates for this); - code directly relying on read_var_value will instead read non-local variables in frames where they are not even defined. This change adds the necessary context to symbol reads (to get the block they belong to) and to blocks (the static link property, if any) so that GDB can make the proper decisions when dealing with non-local varibale references. gdb/ChangeLog: * ada-lang.c (ada_read_var_value): Add a var_block argument and pass it to default_read_var_value. * block.c (block_static_link): New accessor. * block.h (block_static_link): Declare it. * buildsym.c (finish_block_internal): Add a static_link argument. Allow gdb to find debug symbols file by build-id for PE file format also
This promotes BFD's struct elf_build_id to the generic struct bfd_build_id, populated when an ELF or PE BFD is read. gdb is updated to use that, and to use the build-id to find symbols for PE files also. There is currently no generic way to extract the build-id from an object file, perhaps an option to objdump to do this might make sense? On x86_64-pc-cygwin, gdb's sepdebug.exp changes: -# of unsupported tests 1 +# of expected passes 90 I don't seem to get consistent testsuite runs on i686-linux-gnu, but there don't appear to be any regressions. bfd/ChangeLog: 2015-06-10 Jon Turney <jon.turney@dronecode.org.uk> * elf-bfd.h : Remove struct elf_build_id. * bfd.c : Add struct bfd_build_id. * bfd-in2.h: Regenerate. * elf.c (elfobj_grok_gnu_build_id): Update to use bfd_build_id. * libpei.h: Add protoype and macros for bfd_XXi_slurp_codeview_record. * peXXigen.c (_bfd_XXi_slurp_codeview_record): Make public * peicode.h (pe_bfd_read_buildid): Add. Don't set breakpoints on import stubs on Windows amd64
On Windows amd64, setting a breakpoint on a symbol imported from a shared library after that library is loaded creates a breakpoint with two locations, one on the import stub, and another in the shared library, while on i386, the breakpoint is only set in the shared library. This is due to the minimal symbol for the import stub not being correctly given the type mst_solib_trampoline on Windows amd64, unlike Windows i386. As currently written, coff_symfile_read is always skipping over the character after the "__imp_" (amd64) or "_imp_" (i386) prefix, assuming that it is '_'. However, while i386 is an underscored target, amd64 is not. On x86_64-pc-cygwin, it fixes: - FAIL: gdb.base/solib-symbol.exp: foo in libmd + PASS: gdb.base/solib-symbol.exp: foo in libmd Unfortunately, several other tests which passed now fail but that's because this issue was masking other problems. No change on i686-pc-cygwin. gdb/ChangeLog: 2015-03-26 Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> Jon TURNEY <jon.turney@dronecode.org.uk> * coffread.c (coff_symfile_read): When constructing the name of an import stub symbol from import symbol for amd64, only skip the char after _imp_ if the target is underscored (like i386) and the char is indeed the target's leading char. |

C++ keyword cleanliness, mostly auto-generated
This patch renames symbols that happen to have names which are reserved keywords in C++. Most of this was generated with Tromey's cxx-conversion.el script. Some places where later hand massaged a bit, to fix formatting, etc. And this was rebased several times meanwhile, along with re-running the script, so re-running the script from scratch probably does not result in the exact same output. I don't think that matters anyway. gdb/ 2015-02-27 Tom Tromey <tromey@redhat.com> Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> Rename symbols whose names are reserved C++ keywords throughout. gdb/gdbserver/ 2015-02-27 Tom Tromey <tromey@redhat.com> Pedro Alves <palves@redhat.com> Rename symbols whose names are reserved C++ keywords throughout. |

Split struct symtab into two: struct symtab and compunit_symtab.
Currently "symtabs" in gdb are stored as a single linked list of struct symtab that contains both symbol symtabs (the blockvectors) and file symtabs (the linetables). This has led to confusion, bugs, and performance issues. This patch is conceptually very simple: split struct symtab into two pieces: one part containing things common across the entire compilation unit, and one part containing things specific to each source file. Example. For the case of a program built out of these files: foo.c foo1.h foo2.h bar.c foo1.h bar.h Today we have a single list of struct symtabs: objfile -> foo.c -> foo1.h -> foo2.h -> bar.c -> foo1.h -> bar.h -> NULL where "->" means the "next" pointer in struct symtab. With this patch, that turns into: objfile -> foo.c(cu) -> bar.c(cu) -> NULL | | v v foo.c bar.c | | v v foo1.h foo1.h | | v v foo2.h bar.h | | v v NULL NULL where "foo.c(cu)" and "bar.c(cu)" are struct compunit_symtab objects, and the files foo.c, etc. are struct symtab objects. So now, for example, when we want to iterate over all blockvectors we can now just iterate over the compunit_symtab list. Plus a lot of the data that was either unused or replicated for each symtab in a compilation unit now lives in struct compunit_symtab. E.g., the objfile pointer, the producer string, etc. I thought of moving "language" out of struct symtab but there is logic to try to compute the language based on previously seen files, and I think that's best left as is for now. With my standard monster benchmark with -readnow (which I can't actually do, but based on my calculations), whereas today the list requires 77MB to store all the struct symtabs, it now only requires 37MB. A modest space savings given the gigabytes needed for all the debug info, etc. Still, it's nice. Plus, whereas today we create a copy of dirname for each source file symtab in a compilation unit, we now only create one for the compunit. So this patch is basically just a data structure reorg, I don't expect significant performance improvements from it. Notes: 1) A followup patch can do a similar split for struct partial_symtab. I have left that until after I get the changes I want in to better utilize .gdb_index (it may affect how we do partial syms). 2) Another followup patch *could* rename struct symtab. The term "symtab" is ambiguous and has been a source of confusion. In this patch I'm leaving it alone, calling it the "historical" name of "filetabs", which is what they are now: just the file-name + line-table. gdb/ChangeLog: Split struct symtab into two: struct symtab and compunit_symtab. * amd64-tdep.c (amd64_skip_xmm_prologue): Fetch producer from compunit. * block.c (blockvector_for_pc_sect): Change "struct symtab *" argument to "struct compunit_symtab *". change minsyms not to be relocated at read-time
This removes the runtime offsets from minsyms. Instead, these offsets will now be applied whenever the minsym's address is computed. This patch redefines MSYMBOL_VALUE_ADDRESS to actually use the offsets from the given objfile. Then, it updates all the symbol readers, changing them so that they do not add in the section offset when creating the symbol. This change also lets us remove relocation of minsyms from objfile_relocate1 and also msymbols_sort. 2014-02-26 Tom Tromey <tromey@redhat.com> * minsyms.c (msymbols_sort): Remove. * minsyms.h (msymbols_sort): Remove. * objfiles.c (objfile_relocate1): Don't relocate minsyms. * symtab.h (MSYMBOL_VALUE_ADDRESS): Use objfile offsets. * elfread.c (elf_symtab_read): Don't add section offsets. * xcoffread.c (record_minimal_symbol): Don't add section offset to minimal symbol address. * somread.c (text_offset, data_offset): Remove. use bound_minsym as result for lookup_minimal_symbol et al
This patch changes a few minimal symbol lookup functions to return a bound_minimal_symbol rather than a pointer to the minsym. This change helps prepare gdb for computing a minimal symbol's address at the point of use. Note that this changes even those functions that ostensibly search a single objfile. That was necessary because, in fact, those functions can search an objfile and its separate debug objfiles; and it is important for the caller to know in which objfile the minimal symbol was actually found. The bulk of this patch is mechanical. 2014-02-26 Tom Tromey <tromey@redhat.com> * ada-lang.c (ada_update_initial_language): Update. change minsym representation
In a later patch we're going to change the minimal symbol address calculation to apply section offsets at the point of use. To make it simpler to catch potential problem spots, this patch changes the representation of minimal symbols and introduces new minimal-symbol-specific variants of the various accessors. This is necessary because it would be excessively ambitious to try to convert all the symbol types at once. The core of this change is just renaming a field in minimal_symbol; the rest is just a fairly mechanical rewording. 2014-02-26 Tom Tromey <tromey@redhat.com> * symtab.h (struct minimal_symbol) <mginfo>: Rename from ginfo. Ignore __fu<digits>__ symbols from COFF symbol tables
The debugger sometimes prints strange function names for given addresses. For instance, with the following source code... 4 procedure Foo is 5 A : Integer; 6 begin 7 Do_Nothing (A'Address); 8 end Foo; ... we can see... (gdb) info line 5 Line 5 of "foo.adb" starts at address 0x4017ca <_ada_foo+6> and ends at 0x4017d2 <_fu29__system__scalar_values__is_is4+7>. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ _fu29__system__scalar_values__is_is4 is an artificial symbol generated by the linker, and interferes with the pc-to-symbol resolution. There isn't much in the general minimal_symbol data that could help us identify them, so this patch changes the COFF reader to simply ignore them. gdb/ChangeLog: * coffread.c (is_import_fixup_symbol): New function. (record_minimal_symbol): Use is_import_fixup_symbol to detect import fixup symbols, and discard them. gdb/testsuite/ChangeLog: * gdb.ada/win_fu_syms: New testcase. |
