ed443b61e1 [ARM] Fixup PC in software single step
When I exercise GDBserver software single step, I see the following
error, which has been already handled by GDB properly.

In GDBserver log, we can see, GDBserver tries to single step instruction
on 0xb6e0a6e4, and destination address is 0xffff0fe0,

 stop pc is 0xb6e0a6e4
 Writing f001f0e7 to 0xffff0fe0 in process 7132
 Failed to insert breakpoint at 0xffff0fe0 (Input/output error).
 Failed to insert breakpoint at 0xffff0fe0 (-1).

however, it fails inserting breakpoint there.  This problem has already
fixed by GDB, see comments in arm-linux-tdep.c:arm_linux_software_single_step

so we need to do the same thing in GDB side as well.  This patch adds
a new field fixup in arm_get_next_pcs_ops, so that we can fix up PC
for arm-linux target.  In this way, both GDB and GDBserver can single
step instructions going to kernel helpers.

4d18591be9 Remove argument pc in get_next_pcs
Nowadays, get_next_pcs in linux_target_ops has two parameters PC
and REGCACHE.  Parameter PC looks redundant because it can be go
from REGCACHE.  The patch is to remove PC from the arguments for
various functions.

in my test setting, program is compiled in arm mode, but the glibc
is built in thumb mode, so when we do 'step' to step over syscall
instruction svc for SIGRETURN, GDB should set breakpoint for arm mode
in the program, even though the current program in glibc is in thumb
mode.  Current GDB doesn't consider the case that the mode of program
SIGRETURN goes to can be different from current program mode.

In fact, GDB has taken care of this arm/thumb mode changes already,
see

e7cf25a8ab [ARM] Remove field syscall_next_pc in struct gdbarch_tdep
Field syscall_next_pc in struct gdbarch_tdep was to calculate the
next pc of syscall instruction.  On linux target, syscall_next_pc
is set to arm_linux_syscall_next_pc, to do linux specific things.
However, after we have struct arm_get_next_pcs_ops, we can do the
same thing in struct arm_get_next_pcs_ops field syscall_next_pc,
so syscall_next_pc in struct gdbarch_tdep is not needed any more.

1b451dda5f [ARM] Make thumb2_breakpoint static again
This patch makes thumb2_breakpoint static.  When writing this patch,
I find the only reason we keep thumb2_breakpoint extern is that it
is used as an argument passed to arm_gdbserver_get_next_pcs.  However,
field arm_thumb2_breakpoint is only used in a null check in
thumb_get_next_pcs_raw, so I wonder why do need to pass thumb2_breakpoint
to arm_gdbserver_get_next_pcs.

thumb2_breakpoint was added by Daniel Jacobowitz in order to support
single-step IT block
https://sourceware.org/ml/gdb-patches/2010-01/msg00624.html  the logic
there was if we have 32-bit thumb-2 breakpoint defined, we can safely
single-step IT block, otherwise, we can't.  Daniel didn't want to use
16-bit thumb BKPT instruction, because it triggers even on instruction
which should be executed.  Secondly, using 16-bit thumb illegal
instruction on top of 32-bit thumb instruction may break the meaning of
original IT blocks, because the other 16-bit can be regarded as an

Let us back to this patch, GDB/GDBserver can safely single step
IT block if thumb2_breakpoint is defined, but the single step logic
doesn't have to know the thumb-2 breakpoint instruction.  Only
breakpoint insertion mechanism decides to use which breakpoint
instruction.  In the software single step code, instead of pass
thumb2_breakpoint, we can pass a boolean variable
has_thumb2_breakpoint indicate whether the target has thumb-2
breakpoint defined, which is equivalent to the original code.

Regression tested on arm-linux.  No regression.

d9311bfaf5 Support software single step on ARM in GDBServer
This patch teaches GDBServer how to software single step on ARM
linux by sharing code with GDB.

The arm_get_next_pcs function in GDB is now shared with GDBServer.  So
that GDBServer can use the function to return the possible addresses of
the next PC.

A proper shared context was also needed so that we could share the code,
this context is described in the arm_get_next_pcs structure.

Testing :

No regressions, tested on ubuntu 14.04 ARMv7 and x86.
With gdbserver-{native,extended} / { -marm -mthumb }

d0e59a6888 Refactor arm_software_single_step to use regcache
This patch is in preparation for software single step support on ARM in
GDBServer. It refactors arm_*_software_single_step and sub-functions to
use regcache instead of frame to access registers so that the code can be
shared more easily between GDB and GDBServer.

Note also that since the intention is at some point to get rid of frame
completely in that function, memory reads have also been replaced by
read_memory_unsigned_integer rather than get_frame_memory_unsigned.

No regressions, tested on ubuntu 14.04 ARMv7 and x86.

72aded8673 gdb/linux-record: Fix readdir and getdents handling
getdents buffer size is given in bytes, not dirent entries (which have
variable size anyway).  We don't need size_dirent and size_dirent64 for
this reason.

readdir, on the other hand, needs size of old_linux_dirent, which is
a somewhat different structure.  Accordingly, rename size_dirent
to size_old_dirent.

7571f7f297 gdb/linux-record: Fix sizes of sigaction and sigset_t
The values were mistakenly set to size of glibc's sigset_t (128 bytes)
and sigaction (140 or 152 bytes) instead of the kernel ones.  The kernel
has 4 or 8 byte old_sigset_t, 8 byte sigset_t, 16 or 32 byte old_sigaction,
20 or 32 byte sigaction.

d625f9a988 gdb/linux-record: Fix size_[ug]id values
i386 and arm wrongly set them to 2, when it should be 4.  size_[ug]id is used
by getgroups32 etc syscalls, while size_old_[ug]id is used for getgroups16
and friends.

9a3c826307 Add some more casts (1/2)
Note: I needed to split this patch in two, otherwise it's too big for
the mailing list.

This patch adds explicit casts to situations where a void pointer is
assigned to a pointer to the "real" type.  Building in C++ mode requires
those assignments to use an explicit cast.  This includes, for example:

 - callback arguments (cleanups, comparison functions, ...)
 - data attached to some object (objfile, program space, etc) in the form
   of a void pointer
 - "user data" passed to some function

This patch comes from the commit "(mostly) auto-generated patch to insert
casts needed for C++", taken from Pedro's C++ branch.

Only files built on x86 with --enable-targets=all are modified, so the
native files for other arches will need to be dealt with separately.

I built-tested this with --enable-targets=all and reg-tested.  To my
surprise, a test case (selftest.exp) had to be adjusted.

Here's the ChangeLog entry.  Again, this was relatively quick to make
despite the length, thanks to David Malcom's script, although I don't
believe it's very useful information in that particular case...

224c3ddb89 Add casts to memory allocation related calls
Most allocation functions (if not all) return a void* pointing to the
allocated memory.  In C++, we need to add an explicit cast when
assigning the result to a pointer to another type (which is the case
more often than not).

The content of this patch is taken from Pedro's branch, from commit
"(mostly) auto-generated patch to insert casts needed for C++".  I
validated that the changes make sense and manually reflowed the code to
make it respect the coding style.  I also found multiple places where I
could use XNEW/XNEWVEC/XRESIZEVEC/etc.

Thanks a lot to whoever did that automated script to insert casts, doing
it completely by hand would have taken a ridiculous amount of time.

Only files built on x86 with --enable-targets=all are modified.  This
means that all other -nat.c files are untouched and will have to be
dealt with later by using appropiate compilers.  Or maybe we can try to
build them with a regular g++ just to know where to add casts, I don't
know.

I built-tested this with --enable-targets=all and reg-tested.

750ce8d1ca Support single step by arch or target
Nowadays, GDB only knows whether architecture supports hardware single
step or software single step (through gdbarch hook software_single_step),
and for a given instruction or instruction sequence, GDB knows how to
do single step (hardware or software).  However, GDB doesn't know whether
the target supports hardware single step.  It is possible that the
architecture doesn't support hardware single step, such as arm, but
the target supports, such as simulator.  This was discussed in this
thread https://www.sourceware.org/ml/gdb/2009-12/msg00033.html before.

I encounter this problem for aarch64 multi-arch support.  When aarch64
debugs arm program, gdbarch is arm, so software single step is still
used.  However, the underneath linux kernel does support hardware
single step, so IWBN to use it.

This patch is to add a new target_ops hook to_can_do_single_step, and
only use it in arm_linux_software_single_step to decide whether or not
to use hardware single step.  On the native aarch64 linux target, 1 is
returned.  On other targets, -1 is returned.  On the remote target, if
the target supports s and S actions in the vCont? reply, then target
can do single step.  However,  old GDBserver will send s and S in the
reply to vCont?, which will confuse new GDB.  For example, old GDBserver
on arm-linux will send s and S in the reply to vCont?, but it doesn't
support hardware single step.  On the other hand, new GDBserver, on
arm-linux for example, will not send s and S in the reply to vCont?,
but old GDB thinks it doesn't support vCont packet at all.  In order
to address this problem, I add a new qSupported feature vContSupported,
which indicates GDB wants to know the supported actions in the reply
to vCont?, and qSupported response contains vContSupported if the
stub is able tell supported vCont actions in the reply of vCont?.

If the patched GDB talks with patched GDBserver on x86, the RSP traffic
is like this:

 -> $qSupported:...+;vContSupported+
 <- ...+;vContSupported+
 ...
 -> $vCont?
 <- vCont;c;C;t;s;S;r

then, GDB knows the stub can do single step, and may stop using software
single step even the architecture doesn't support hardware single step.

If the patched GDB talks with patched GDBserver on arm, the last vCont?
reply will become:

 <- vCont;c;C;t

GDB thinks the target doesn't support single step, so it will use software
single step.

If the patched GDB talks with unpatched GDBserver, the RSP traffic is like
this:

 <- ...+
 ...
 -> $vCont?

although GDBserver returns s and S, GDB still thinks GDBserver may not
support single step because it doesn't support vContSupported.

8d7493201c Replace some xmalloc-family functions with XNEW-family ones
This patch is part of the make-gdb-buildable-in-C++ effort.  The idea is
to change some calls to the xmalloc family of functions to calls to the
equivalents in the XNEW family.  This avoids adding an explicit cast, so
it keeps the code a bit more readable.  Some of them also map relatively
well to a C++ equivalent (XNEW (struct foo) -> new foo), so it will be
possible to do scripted replacements if needed.

I only changed calls that were obviously allocating memory for one or
multiple "objects".  Allocation of variable sizes (such as strings or
buffer handling) will be for later (and won't use XNEW).

f486487f55 Mostly trivial enum fixes
This is a patch I extracted from Pedro's C++ branch.  It contains the
most trivial enum fixes, where an integer type/value was used instead
of the appropriate enum type/value.  It fixes many C++ errors, since
in C++ you can't mix integers and enums implicitely.

Regardless of the C++ conversion, I think this is a good cleanup to make
use of the appropriate enum types.

Regression-tested on native x86_64.

5cd867b414 Call set_gdbarch_get_siginfo_type in linux_init_abi
linux_get_siginfo_type is installed to many linux gdbarch.  This patch
is to move this to a common area linux-tdep.c:linux_init_abi, so that
linux_get_siginfo_type is installed to every linux gdbarch.  If some
linux gdbarch needs its own version, please override it in
$ARCH_linux_init_abi.  In the testsuite, we enable siginfo related
tests for all linux targets.

330c6ca9a0 Remove global variable arm_linux_vfp_register_count in arm-linux-nat.c
This patch is to remove the global variable arm_linux_vfp_register_count
from arm-linux-nat.c.  This global variable is set when native gdb
looks for the right target description according HWCAP.  However,
'struct gdbarch_tdep' has already had a field have_vfp_registers, which
is a boolean about whether target has vfp registers or not.  This
patch converts this boolean field to a numeric counter to replace
global variable arm_linux_vfp_register_count.

I see this fail on arm-linux target,

which is caused by the PC isn't expected after displaced stepping the
svc instruction.  The code is:

GDB writes the wrong address back to pc because GDB thinks the

906d60cf46 PR13858 - Can't do displaced stepping with no symbols
Running break-interp.exp with the target always in non-stop mode trips
on PR13858, as enabling non-stop also enables displaced stepping.

The problem is that when GDB doesn't know where the entry point is, it
doesn't know where to put the displaced stepping scratch pad.  The
test added by this commit exercises this.  Without the fix, we get:

 FAIL: gdb.base/step-over-no-symbols.exp: displaced=on: advanced

The fix switches all GNU/Linux ports to get the entry point from
AT_ENTRY in the target auxiliary vector instead of from symbols.  This
is currently only done by PPC when Cell debugging is enabled, but I
think all archs should be able to do the same.  Note that
ppc_linux_displaced_step_location cached the result, I'm guessing to
avoid constantly re-fetching the auxv out of remote targets, but
that's no longer necessary nowadays, as the auxv blob is itself cached
in the inferior object.  The ppc_linux_entry_point_addr global is
obviously bad for multi-process too nowadays.

Tested on x86-64 (-m64/-m32), PPC64 (-m64/-m32) and S/390 GNU/Linux.
Yao tested the new test on ARM as well.

458c8db89f Partial fix for PR breakpoints/10737: Make syscall info be per-arch instead of global
This patch intends to partially fix PR breakpoints/10737, which is
about making the syscall information (for the "catch syscall" command)
be per-arch, instead of global.  This is not a full fix because of the
other issues pointed by Pedro here:

  <https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=10737#c5>

However, I consider it a good step towards the real fix.  It will also
help me fix <https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=17402>.

What this patch does, basically, is move the "syscalls_info"
struct to gdbarch.  Currently, the syscall information is stored in a
global variable inside gdb/xml-syscall.c, which means that there is no
easy way to correlate this info with the current target or
architecture being used, for example.  This causes strange behaviors,
because the syscall info is not re-read when the arch changes.  For
example, if you put a syscall catchpoint in syscall 5 on i386 (syscall
open), and then load a x86_64 program on GDB and put the same syscall
5 there (fstat on x86_64), you will still see that GDB tells you that
it is catching "open", even though it is not.  With this patch, GDB
correctly says that it will be catching fstat syscalls.

x86_64.  Currently, it doesn't work.  I intend to work on this later.

dcd4a3a4e7 ARM: arm_breakpoint should be little endian form in case for arm BE8
tdep->arm_breakpoint, tdep->thumb_breakpoint, tdep->thumb2_breakpoint
should be set le_ variants in case of arm BE8 code. Those instruciton
sequences are writen to target with simple write_memory, without
regarding gdbarch_byte_order_for_code. But in BE8 case even data
memory is in big endian form, instructions are still in little endian
form.

Because of this issue there are many issues while running gdb test
case in armv7b mode. For example gdb.arch/arm-disp-step.exp test fails
because it gets SIGILL when displaced instrucion sequence reaches
break instruction, which is in wrong byte order.

Solution is to set tdep->xxx_breakpoint sequences in BE8 case (i.e
when gdbarch_byte_order_for_code is BFD_ENDIAN_BIG.

8f0435f75e Add 'regset' parameter to 'iterate_over_regset_sections_cb'
This adds the 'regset' parameter to the iterator callback.
Consequently the 'regset_from_core_section' method is dropped for all
targets that provide the iterator method.

This change prepares for replacing regset_from_core_section
everywhere, thereby eliminating one gdbarch interface.  Since the
iterator is usually no more complex than regset_from_core_section
alone, targets that previously didn't define core_regset_sections will
then gain multi-arch capable core file generation support without
increased complexity.

f347ffc90a gdb/arm-linux-tdep.c: Handle Thumb2 signal trampolines
Recent versions of glibc have assembled the signal trampoline code
as Thumb2, which causes gdb to misinterpret them and a number of
testsuite tests to fail. Educate gdb about these trampolines and
get the tests running again.

3343ef8687 Skip 'bx reg' on arm-linux
In arm-tdep.c, arm_skip_stub is installed to gdbarch
skip_trampoline_code, but in arm-linux-tdep.c,
find_solib_trampoline_target is installed to skip_trampoline_code.
That means gdb configured for arm-linux target doesn't recognize some
arm specific trampolines or stubs.  Beside handling generic solib
trampoline, gdb for arm-linux target should be able to handle arm
specific trampolines.  This patch is to skip arm specific stubs, if
any, and as a fallback, skip the generic solib trampoline.

410a0ff2df Remove `expout*' globals from parser-defs.h
This commit removes the "expout*" globals from our parser code, turning
them into a structure that is passed when an expression needs to be
evaluated.  This is the initial step to make our parser less
"globalized".

This is mostly a mechanical patch, which creates a structure containing
the "expout*" globals and then modify all the functions that handle them
in order to take the structure as argument.  It is big, and has been
reviewed at least 4 times, so I think everything is covered.

8d85bacb91 Extend handling of immediates on ARM's SystemTap SDT probe support
Continuing my series of fixes on the SystemTap SDT support for the
ARM/AArch64 architectures, this patch now extends how ARM's SDT specific
parser handles literal numbers (immediates).

Currently, it only accepts "#" as the prefix.  However, according to
"info '(as) ARM-Chars'", expressions can also have "$" and nothing as a
prefix.  This patch extends the parser to accept those options.

05c0465e16 Extend SystemTap SDT probe argument parser
This patch extends the current generic parser for SystemTap SDT probe
arguments.  It can be almost considered a cleanup, but the main point of
it is actually to allow the generic parser to accept multiple prefixes
and suffixes for the its operands (i.e., integers, register names, and
register indirection).

I have chosen to implement this as a list of const strings, and declare
this list as "static" inside each target's method used to initialize
gdbarch.

This patch is actually a preparation for an upcoming patch for ARM,
which implements the support for multiple integer prefixes (as defined
by ARM's asm spec).  And AArch64 will also need this, for the same
reason.

This patch was regtested on all architectures that it touches (i.e.,
i386, x86_64, ARM, PPC/PPC64, s390x and IA-64).  No regressions were found.

9f94866008 [Committing the `catch syscall' patch for ARM, from Samuel Bronson.]
This time, it passes all the tests and comes with a nearly complete
XML file (plus a script that can nearly regenerate the XML file).

(I elected to leave out __ARM_NR_cmpxchg, since it has dire warnings
to the effect that the only pieces of code that should be aware of it
are the implementation and the __kuser_cmpxchg code in entry-armv.S.)

948f8e3d72 -Wpointer-sign: char -> gdb_byte.
-Wpointer-sign catches all these cases across the codebase that should
be using gdb_byte for raw target bytes.  I think these are all

As a follow up to:

In a nutshell, casts between 'char **' <-> 'unsigned char **' and
'char **' <-> 'const char **' are invalid.

I grepped for "\*\*) &" and found these.  There's another one in
demangle.c, but I've split fixing that one to a separate patch.

I think the ada_decode_symbol change is perhaps the one that could be
surprising.  The function's description has this comment, which makes
things much clearer:

   The GSYMBOL parameter is "mutable" in the C++ sense: logically
   const, but nevertheless modified to a semantically equivalent form
   when a decoded name is cached in it.  */

 const char *
 ada_decode_symbol (const struct general_symbol_info *gsymbol)

With that out of the way, I think the patch ends up being pretty
obvious.

Tested on x86_64 Fedora 17.
