e6cc316af9 Enable 64-bit archives in ar and ranlib
Since existing ld and gold support the 64-bit (MIPS) ELF archives, we
can use the 64-bit (MIPS) ELF archives as 64-bit archives.  Since the
plugin target is used to create archive in plugin-enabled ar, we need
a way to enable 64-bit archives in the plugin target.  This patch adds
--enable-64-bit-archive to bfd to force 64-bit archives in ar and
ranlib.  Since both 64-bit MIPS and s390 ELF targets currently use
64-bit archives, 64-bit archives are enabled by default for them.
64-bit archive is generated automatically if the archive is too big.

Tested on Linux/x86 and Linux/x86-64 with existing ld and gold.

b8871f357f Properly implement STT_COMMON
The BFD configure option, --enable-elf-stt-common, can't be to used to
verify STT_COMMON implementation with the normal binutils build.  Instead,
this patch removes it from BFD.  It adds --elf-stt-common=[no|yes] to ELF
assembler/objcopy and adds -z common/-z nocommon to ld.

A configure option, --enable-elf-stt-common, is added to gas to specify
whether ELF assembler should generate common symbols with the STT_COMMON
type by default.

Since BSF_KEEP_G is never used, it is renamed to BSF_ELF_COMMON for ELF
common symbols.

f74839702e Add extern_protected_data and set it for x86
Re-apply: commit ca3fe95e46

With copy relocation, address of protected data defined in the shared
library may be external.  This patch adds extern_protected_data and
changes _bfd_elf_symbol_refs_local_p to return false for protected data
if extern_protected_data is true.

This patch will break building shared libraries with protected data
symbols using GCCs older than GCC 5 without the bug fix for

https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=65248

GCC backport request should be made in the GCC bug report above.

To get correct run-time behavior on Linux, glibc 2.22 or above are
required, which have the bug fix for

We can't check if input is ELF in copy_file since some targets may only

caa4096e84 Don't call bfd_link_hash_table_free
Freeing the linker hash table is a royal pain.  It can't be freed
before the _bfd_write_contents call in bfd_close, because some target
bfd_write_contents functions access the hash table.  It can't be freed
after bfd_close either, since bfd_alloc memory holding side data
structures disappears (PR17047).  Clearly the only place it can be freed
is actually in bfd_close.  This patch doesn't do that, but kills off
the existing means of freeing the hash table via a bfd target xvec call.

This patch provides a means for backend relax_section support to
increase the size of a section without needing to reallocate
section contents.  This helps reduce memory usage when the added space
does not need to be written in relax_section, as is the case for
powerpc.  Writing the stubs later means a few tweaks are needed in the
powerpc relocate_section function, but also removes some code
duplication since the extra ld -r relocs can be written there too.
