994e9c834d Make testing gdb with FORCE_SEPARATE_MI_TTY=1 actually work
Runing the whole gdb testsuite with MI on a separate tty, with:

  make check RUNTESTFLAGS="FORCE_SEPARATE_MI_TTY=1"

Doesn't actually work because commit 51f77c3704 ("Add testing
infrastruture bits for running with MI on a separate UI") included a
last-minute rename typo, now fixed with this commit.

ac69f7863a Add "new-ui console" tests
This adds a test that uses new-ui to create a secondary console, and
then runs some basic smoke tests.  It ensures that:

 - synchronous commands send output to the UI that initiated it

 - asynchronous events like breakpoint hits are reported on all
   consoles.

 - "new-ui" without arguments doesn't crash.

 - The "new-ui" command doesn't repeat.

51f77c3704 Add testing infrastruture bits for running with MI on a separate UI
With this, a specific test may can start GDB with MI on a separate UI
by using:

  mi_gdb_start separate-mi-tty

In addition, it's also possible to run the whole testsuite with MI on
a separate tty, with:

 make check RUNTESTFLAGS="FORCE_SEPARATE_MI_TTY=1"

gdb_main_spawn_id and mi_spawn_id are added so that tests may expect
output from either channel.

While at it, inferior_spawn_id was not being cleared when gdb exits,
unlike the other spawn ids, thus a test that starts gdb more than once
would end up using a stale spawn id.

6e774b13c3 Make ftrace tests work with remote targets
When we build a shared library for testing, it is built differently
whether it is meant for the local system or a remote one.  When it is
for the local system, the library is built with no SONAME.  So when the
executable is built, roughly in this way:

  $ gcc testfile.c /path/to/library.so

the executable will contain an absolute reference to the library.  For
example:

  $ readelf -a testsuite/gdb.python/py-shared | grep NEEDED
   0x0000000000000001 (NEEDED)             Shared library: [/home/emaisin/build/binutils-gdb/gdb/testsuite/gdb.python/py-shared-sl.sl]

When testing is done remotely, the absolute path obviously doesn't work.
Therefore, we build the library with an SONAME:

  $ readelf -a testsuite/gdb.python/py-shared-sl.sl | grep SONAME
   0x000000000000000e (SONAME)             Library soname: [py-shared-sl.sl]

which ends up in the executable's NEEDED field:

  $ readelf -a testsuite/gdb.python/py-shared | grep NEEDED
   0x0000000000000001 (NEEDED)             Shared library: [py-shared-sl.sl]

The executable and the library are then uploaded side-by-side on the
remote system.  To allow the dynamic linker to find the shared library,
we have to add the special RPATH value $ORIGIN, which tells it to search
in the executable's directory:

  $ readelf -a testsuite/gdb.python/py-shared | grep ORIGIN
   0x000000000000000f (RPATH)              Library rpath: [$ORIGIN]

The problem with the IPA library is that it doesn't have an SONAME,
making it very difficult to do testing on a remote board.  When a
test executable is linked with it, it contains an absolute reference to
the library path.  Therefore, unless the paths on the target are the
same as on the build system, it won't work.

To make it possible for tests using the IPA library to run test on
remote boards, I suggest adding an SONAME to libinproctrace.so.  I don't
think it should be a big problem for users.  All the libraries installed
on my system have an SONAME, so it should be fine if libinproctrace.so
does too.

As a consequence, native testing does not work anymore, since
executables do not contain the absolute path to the library anymore.  To
keep them working, we can have gdb_load_shlibs copy the library to the
test directory when testing natively.  That's done by modifying
gdb_load_shlibs.  We also have to add RPATH=$ORIGIN to executables, even
when testing natively.

I think it's a good change in general, as it reduces the differences
between testing a native and a remote target.  To further reduce those
differences, we can also always build test shared libraries with an
SONAME.

ftrace.exp and ftrace-lock.exp need to be modified slightly.  The code
checks that the IPA library is loaded using the absolute path on the
build machine.  That obviously doesn't work if the test is done
remotely, as the path will be different.  I changed the tests to only
search for the library basename (e.g. libinproctrace.so).

7817ea4614 Improve gdb_remote_download, remove gdb_download
This patch removes gdb_download in favor of gdb_remote_download, since
they are very close in functionality.  Also, in preparation for the
following patch about shared library handling during tests, it improves
gdb_remote_download so that it uses standard_output_file for any
destination board that is local, not only host.

If the destination board is remote, gdb_remote_download will use the
standard remote_download from DejaGnu, resulting in the file being
transferred on the remote system.

If the destination is local, gdb_remote_download will copy the file to
the standard test directory (found using standard_output_file).  Tcl's
file copy seems to handle gracefully cases where the source file is the
same as the destination, so I don't think it's necessary to check for
that case ourselves, as a previous version of the patch did.

I'd prefer to keep the name gdb_download instead of gdb_remote_download,
since I don't like the fact that gdb_remote_download implies that the
destination is remote, when it's not always the case.  However,
gdb_remote_download is used at many more places than gdb_download, so
it's easier to reuse that.  Also, since it's a wrapper around DejaGnu's
remote_download, it might be better to keep that name.  I don't know.

I ran the testsuite native, with native-gdbserver and with a
remote gdbserver, and didn't see any related failure.

f015c27b52 Fix mi-nonstop.exp with extended-remote
Testing with "maint set target-non-stop on" makes mi-nonstop.exp run
with the extended-remote board.  That reveals that mi-nonstop.exp is
using the wrong predicate to check for "using remote protocol".

This is not visible today because non-stop tests all fail to run with
extended-remote board, because they spawn gdb and then do "set
non-stop on".  However, with that board, gdb connects to the gdbserver
from within mi_gdb_start, and changing non-stop when already connected
doesn't work.  Fix that by instead enabling non-stop mode on gdb's
command line.

6613eb10d1 mi_make_breakpoint: add "evaluated-by" option
For some time now, GDB has permitted target-side evaluation of
breakpoint conditions.  On targets that support this feature, GDB
may output an "evaluated-by" field into the breakpoint reply.

This patch adds handling for this option, and outputs a default
pattern to optionally recognize (and ignore) this pattern in the
reply.

eb8c4e2e66 Explicit locations: MI support for explicit locations
This patch adds support for explicit locations to MI's -break-insert
command. The new options, documented in the User Manual, are
--source, --line, --function, and --label.

e8376742bd Adjust MI to $inferior_spawn_id
Rather than trying to determine where (which spawn id) the inferior
output comes out from, which depends on e.g., remote that supports
file i/o remote protocol extension, vs remote that sends inferior
output through a separate $inferior_spawn_id, vs native debugging,
which sends output through $gdb_spawn_id, vs native debugging with a
test that uses "separate-inferior-tty" (like mi-console.exp does),
always expect inferior output from both $inferior_spawn_id and
$gdb_spawn_id.

mi-console.exp itself already copes with different possible outputs in
a similar way:

 # Combine both outputs in a single pattern.
 set output "($semihosted_output|$native_output)"

Fixes:

 FAIL: gdb.mi/mi-console.exp: Testing console output inferior output (timeout)

when testing against local gdbserver with gdb,noinferiorio removed
from the board file.

a8d9763abd Accept all-stop alternative in mi_expect_interrupt
When interrupting a thread in non-stop vs all-stop, the signal given in
the MI *stopped event is not the same. Currently, mi_expect_interrupt only
accepts the case for non-stop, so this adds the alternative for all-stop.

	alternative event for when in all-stop mode.

717cf30c82 Introduce gdb_interact in testsuite
gdb_interact is a small utility that we have found quite useful to debug
test cases.

Putting gdb_interact in a test suspends it and allows to interact with
gdb to inspect whatever you want. You can then type ">>>" to resume the
test execution. Of course, this is only for gdb devs. It wouldn't make
sense to leave a gdb_interact permanently in a test case.

When starting the interaction with the user, the script prints this
banner:

Notes:
* When gdb is launched, the gdb_spawn_id variable (lib/gdb.exp) is
  assigned -1. Given the name, I would expect it to contain the gdb
  expect spawn id, which is needed for interact. I changed all places
  that set gdb_spawn_id to -1 to set it to the actual gdb spawn id
  instead.

* When entering the "interact" mode, the last (gdb) prompt is already
  eaten by expect, so it doesn't show up on the terminal. Subsequent
  prompts do appear though. We tried to print "(gdb)" just before the
  interact to replace it. However, it could be misleading if you are
  debugging an MI test case, it makes you think that you are typing in a
  CLI prompt, when in reality it's MI. In the end I decided that since
  the feature is for developers who know what they're doing and that one
  is normally consciously using gdb_interact, the script doesn't need
  to babysit the user.

* There are probably some quirks depending on where in the script
  gdb_interact appears (e.g. it could interfere with following
  commands and make them fail), but it works for most cases. Quirks can
  always be fixed later.

The idea and original implementation was contributed by Anders

09635af7cd gdbserver-support: Handle gdbserver start failures
As it happens we have a board that fails a gdb.base/gcore-relro.exp
test case reproducibly and moreover the case appears to trigger a
kernel bug making the it less than usable.  Specifically the board
remains responsive to some extent, however processes do not appear
to be able to successfully complete termination anymore and perhaps
more importantly further gdbserver processes can be started, but they
never reach the stage of listening on the RSP socket.

This change handles timeouts in gdbserver start properly, by throwing
a TCL error exception when gdbserver does not report listening on the
RSP socket in time.  This is then caught at the outer level and
reported, and 2 rather than 1 is returned so that the caller may tell
the failure to start gdbserver and other issues apart and act
accordingly (or do nothing).

I thought letting the exception unwind further on might be a good idea
for any test harnesses out there to break outright where a gdbserver
start error is silently ignored right now, however I figured out the
calls to gdbserver-support.exp are buried down too deep in the GDB test
suite for such a change to be made easily.  I think returning a distinct
return value is good enough (the API says "non-zero", so 2 is as good as
1) and we can always make the error harder in a later step if required.

With config/gdbserver.exp being used this change remains transparent
to the target board, the return value is passed up by gdb_reload and
the error exception unwinds through gdbserver_gdb_load and is caught
and handled by mi_gdb_target_load.  A call to perror is still made,
reporting the timeout, and in the case of mi_gdb_target_load the
procedure returns a value denoting unsuccessful completion.  An
unsuccessful completion of gdb_reload is already handled elsewhere.

An alternative gdbserver board configuration can interpret the return
value in its gdb_reload implementation and catch the error in
gdbserver_gdb_load in an attempt to recover a target board that has
gone astray, for example by rebooting the board somehow.  This has
proved effective with our failing board, that now completes the
remaining test cases with no further hiccups.

a25eb0280d gdb/testsuite: Add a way to send multiple init commands
Right now we provide a board info entry, `gdb_init_command', that allows
one to send a single command to GDB before the program to be debugged is
started.  This is useful e.g. for slow remote targets to change the
default "remotetimeout" setting.  Occasionally I found a need to send
multiple commands instead, however this cannot be achieved with
`gdb_init_command'.

This change therefore extends the mechanism by adding a TCL list of GDB
commands to send, via a board info entry called `gdb_init_commands'.
There is no limit as to the number of commands put there.  The old
`gdb_init_command' mechanism remains supported for compatibility with
existing people's environments.

	* lib/gdb-utils.exp: New file.
	* lib/gdb.exp (gdb_run_cmd): Call gdb_init_commands, replacing
	inline `gdb_init_command' processing.

329ea57934 enable target async by default; separate MI and target notions of async
This finally makes background execution commands possible by default.

However, in order to do that, there's one last thing we need to do --
we need to separate the MI and target notions of "async".  Unlike the
CLI, where the user explicitly requests foreground vs background
execution in the execution command itself (c vs c&), MI chose to treat
"set target-async" specially -- setting it changes the default
behavior of execution commands.

So, we can't simply "set target-async" default to on, as that would
affect MI frontends.  Instead we have to make the setting MI-specific,
and teach MI about sync commands on top of an async target.

Because the "target" word in "set target-async" ends up as a potential
source of confusion, the patch adds a "set mi-async" option, and makes
"set target-async" a deprecated alias.

Rather than make the targets always async, this patch introduces a new
"maint set target-async" option so that the GDB developer can control
whether the target is async.  This makes it simpler to debug issues
arising only in the synchronous mode; important because sync mode
seems unlikely to go away.

Unlike in previous revisions, "set target-async" does not affect this
new maint parameter.  The rationale for this is that then one can
easily run the test suite in the "maint set target-async off" mode and
have tests that enable mi-async fail just like they fail on
non-async-capable targets.  This emulation is exactly the point of the
maint option.

I had asked Tom in a previous iteration to split the actual change of
the target async default to a separate patch, but it turns out that
that is quite awkward in this version of the patch, because with MI
async and target async decoupled (unlike in previous versions), if we
don't flip the default at the same time, then just "set target-async
on" alone never actually manages to do anything.  It's best to not
have that transitory state in the tree.

Given "set target-async on" now only has effect for MI, the patch goes
through the testsuite removing it from non-MI tests.  MI tests are
adjusted to use the new and less confusing "mi-async" spelling.

IMO, if you're typing execution commands in a frontend's console, you
expect to see their output.  Indeed it's what you get in sync mode.  I
think async mode should do the same.  Deciding what to mirror to the
console wrt to breakpoints and random stops gets messy real fast.
E.g., say "s" trips on a breakpoint.  We'd clearly want to mirror the
event to the console in this case.  But what about more complicated
cases like "s&; thread n; s&", and one of those steps spawning a new
thread, and that thread hitting a breakpoint?  It's impossible in
general to track whether the thread had any relation to the commands
that had been executed.  So I think we should just simplify and always
mirror breakpoints and random events to the console.

Notes:

  - mi->out is the same as gdb_stdout when MI is the current
    interpreter.  I think that referring to that directly is cleaner.
    An earlier revision of this patch made the changes that are now
    done in mi_on_normal_stop directly in infrun.c:normal_stop, and so
    not having an obvious place to put the new uiout by then, and not
    wanting to abuse CLI's uiout, I made a temporary uiout when
    necessary.

  - Hopefuly the rest of the patch is more or less obvious given the
    comments added.

Tested on x86_64 Fedora 20, no regressions.

getopt-y kinds of things in Tcl.

88bbeca9d5 Fix PR breakpoints/16101: gdb.base/dprintf.exp agent-printf failures with non-Z0-supporting gdbservers
After a previous patch that was committed by Pedro (0000e5cc), trying
to set a dprintf with with a GDBserver that doesn't support agent
commands at all now throws an error.  But the dprintf tests still fail
with some GDBserver targets because they doesn't try to handle the
case of the server reporting support for breakpoint commands, but not
be able to use those in combination with Z0 (because Z0 isn't actually
supported, for example):

 FAIL: gdb.base/dprintf.exp: 1st dprintf, agent
 FAIL: gdb.base/dprintf.exp: 2nd dprintf, agent
 FAIL: gdb.base/dprintf.exp: dprintf info 2 (pattern 4)

Similarly for the MI test.

This patch makes the tests handle this scenario.

Tested with native, and native gdbserver on x86_64 Fedora 17.

As seen above, with MI commands, the *stopped event _doesn't_ have
frame info.  This is because normal_stop, as commanded by the result
of bpstat_print, skips printing frame info in this case (it's an
"event", not a "breakpoint"), and when the interpreter is MI,
mi_on_normal_stop skips calling print_stack_frame, as the normal_stop
call was already done with the MI uiout.  This explains why the async
output is different even with a CLI command.  Its because in async
mode, the mi_on_normal_stop path is always taken; it is always reached
with the MI uiout, because the stop is handled from the event loop,
instead of from within `proceed -> wait_for_inferior -> normal_stop'
with the interpreter overridden, as in sync mode.

This patch fixes the issue by making all cases output the same
*stopped event, by factoring out the print code from normal_stop, and
using it from mi_on_normal_stop as well.  I chose the *stopped output
without a frame, mainly because that is what you already get if you
use MI execution commands, the commands frontends are supposed to use
(except when implementing a console).  This patch makes it simpler to
tweak the MI output differently if desired, as we only have to change
the centralized print_stop_event (taking into account whether the
uiout is MI-like), and all different modes will change accordingly.

Tested on x86_64 Fedora 17, no regressions.  The mi-solib.exp test no
longer fails in async mode with this patch, so the patch removes the
kfail.

4ec7020176 Remove superfluous semicolons from testsuite throughout.
A few months ago semicolons after "return" were removed throughout the
testsuite.  However, as I pointed out in review, they're unnecessary
not just after "return", but pretty much after any tcl command.  ';'
is the command separator, and you only need it if there's another
command on the same line afterwards.

This patch was written by running:

 $ find . -name "*.exp" | xargs grep -l ";\s*$" | xargs sed -i 's/\([^#][^\s*;]*\)\s*;\s*$/\1/'

and then undoing changes to comments, and lib/future.exp.

Tested on x86_64 Fedora 17.
